We carry our biographies around with us everywhere we go. Sometimes however small events take place that allow us to examine these biographies of ours.
While cleaning up old files in my PC I found a wedding video of a relative. Without giving it particular thought, I clicked and started watching it; there were giggles, happy faces, dances and connectedness. I noticed that when the video ended there was smile on my face and a peaceful feeling in my chest. But this is surprising! How is it possible? All I remember in that wedding ceremony was a night full of torture where myself and my family were not treated well. The guest room given to us was changed thrice and no transport was available to us for commuting to various places during day time. Long story short, we were not given the respect which we felt that we deserved. So why I was smiling? Why did I feel good? This our collective family saga of misery & discord, how dare I change the itchiness about that event?
By digging into it I had a firsthand discovery, that perceptions are fluid and so as biographies. What are biographies; reminisces of ways we perceived situations or events of our past. So the question is: why do we perceive an event in a certain way? Why is the same person observed as bad and good at the same time by different people from different points of view? Sometimes it is our internal dialogue & conditioning and sometimes these are external anchors like media or people around which compel us to accept a certain perspective of an event.
Mostly bad memories are the root of depression & our anxieties, so why not consciously pick them up & re-write our memories and add a certain flavor of bliss to them. Difficult? Yes no doubt about it, but yes still possible with great intrinsic rewards. To experience how this re-writing and re-wiring of memories can be done, the following steps may be helpful (you can develop your own procedure if you like so):
- Pick any event in your life which you feel bad about. Write down all the facts, plainly without giving bias of good or bad.
- Make two columns beneath, write down all the things you feel bad and good about that event in each column, respectively.
- Cross the column carrying bad memories
- Consciously visualize the good memories, picture them with gratitude and document any change of perception about that particular event. If it works, do it more often.
If we look closely, the universe is governed, among others, by the law of duality which means that everything which exists has a polar opposite. For example, there is no up without down and there is no outside without inside, so the base concept is that if anything you can feel bad about, can be felt good at the same time. Yes, it is hard, you may find certain situations this might not be very easy to comprehend, but it still works. So choice of writing our biography is purely ours, good or bad. At least, give it a try.
