I know I am probably going to sound like a complete pessimist but I have to say it: Absolutely all human efforts to fix the world are completely futile! I am not sure how unpopular this opinion might be but if we think about it for a second we will understand that it is true.
We have to agree that it is a noble thing to try our best to make the world a better place. The large majority of human beings are concerned with making some kind of change in the world out there in order to find some meaning for their lives. Of course most people aren’t concerned about fixing the world but are rather concerned about carving out their piece of the world so they can enjoy it.
Whether you are worried about fixing the world or carving out your piece of it, all of outward endeavours are equally as futile. Even the greatest of human successes mean nothing in the greater scheme of things. This sounds harsh probably because it is.
The
great pyramids are a symbol of this. What does it matter now for king Ramses that he spared no expense to build the pyramids. He is dead now. What difference would it make if he just decided that he wasn’t going to waste the time? For him I don’t think it makes much difference now.
Even if you were to conquer the whole planet and bring an age of peace and prosperity and have your name remembered for a thousand years, this would make no difference for you in the fullness of time. Eventually your name will be forgotten and your monuments will fall and the even the planet will expire.
So if all our outward endeavour is futile, what is the point of it all? Should we just give up and allow ourselves to quietly expire? Well, No!
We should not stop with our outward endeavour. We must continue to try our best to make the world a better place. We must realise however that making the world a better place is not the point. Living a good life is the point. This means that the point is being appropriate in the moment so that we can savour and relish it.
As Jacques de Villiers explains so nicely, what really matters is the moment that you are in. Your life is nothing but moments. The difficulty for human beings is being able to enjoy the moment and treat it with the due respect. We lose sight of the moment
behind visions of changing the world. Have the vision of changing the world but understand that it is a means, not the end.
The thing people must understand that outward endeavour has an affect on our character and how we see things. How we act in the outward affects us on the inward. This is why we must continue to try to fix the world. Because doing so gives us the chance to fix ourselves so that we can live appropriately in each moment in ecstasy. Changing the world gives us the raw materials to work on ourselves and the way we see the world. Outward endeavour then is not futile if the point of it is to change ourselves, not to change the world.
