I have found a very interesting article which explores the issue of dealing with retirement. In this article the author highlights the distinction between providing for retirement and preparing for it. How to provide for retirement is a financial issue. How to prepare for retirement on the other hand is a matter of the mental preparedness and ability to achieve a state of serenity. Preparation for retirement is informed by expertise and experience and cannot properly be provided by an investment adviser.
In this article Jerry Schuitema argues that the most important desire for a retiree is serenity. What impedes the achievement of serenity is a desire to control because the desire to control produces anxiety. Please read the full article for an insightful and much more detailed exploration of the issue of dealing with retirement.
